CHRISTINA: I enjoy reading paranormal romance and am a fan of the "Greylyn the Guardian Angel" series by KC Freeman. Imagine my delight when she agreed to this interview.
When did you first think you had a book to write, and how did you start?
KC: I have always wanted to write a book, ever since I can remember. I would peck away on my mom’s electric typewriter with all the stories in my head as a child. Then… reality intruded into my imaginary world. So all the stories were pushed back into a corner of my brain for decades while I attended college, worked, got married, had kids… You know? Life. It wasn’t until all my children were in school that I looked around and said, “I want more.” But I didn’t know what. Then my muse flicked my forehead (first time in years), and I sat down at my computer and stared at a blank screen. I had forgotten how to use my imagination. So, I started small. As a freelance content creator, I dipped my toes into the creative world again. Moved into ghostwriting for a couple of years until a client failed to pay me but happily published the book I wrote for him. That’s when I decided it was time for my story to be published under my name. One of those stories tucked away in the far recesses of my mind flew to the front with its hand raised, screaming, “Me! Me! Me!” And that’s how the Greylyn the Guardian Angel series started.

CHRISTINA: Oh, I love Greylyn McLeod.
What's your current project or latest release?
KC: I just published Psychic in Suburbia: Midlife Misadventures of a Medium Mom on September 23, 2025. I am contemplating turning it into a series, but the story is a standalone and can survive without more stories, but Abby McBride, the psychic suburban mom, is so much fun to write.
CHRISTINA: I will have to check it out.
What do you think makes a good story?
KC: Authentic characters readers can connect with. Of course, the characters need a good story to go with their sparkling (and some, not so sparkling) personalities.
CHRISTINA: How did writing your first book change your writing process?
KC: I learned a lot writing that first book. Over thirty-something drafts (and three years) later, I realized my problem wasn’t my story. It was releasing my words/story for others to read, letting go of the control over the story. Once I learned to get over the fear, I worked with others as I wrote to get real-time feedback and to trust myself. Thankfully, the writing process has been streamlined. Part of that process led to the creation of a hybrid pantser-to-plotter procedure where I create a solid outline and then don’t beat myself up (figuratively) when I vary off course. The process should be flexible and always have room for a side character who wants to stand out or wants his own book.
CHRISTINA: Oh yes, I am a huge advocate of critique groups.
And if you could tell your 21-year-old self anything, what would you share?
KC: Life may throw you curveballs. It may force you onto other paths seemingly away from your dreams to the point you can no longer see your earlier dreams. You can take any step, any path, any fork in the road, and somehow/someway you can end up where your younger self always wanted to go. The path may zig. It may zag. And it’s where you’re meant to be. Trust the process, and you’ll end up exactly where you belong.
CHRISTINA: As a writer trying to break into the publishing industry, I appreciate this advice, too. Thank you so much for your time. And for writing such great stories. I need more paranormal romance in my life!
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
After leaving the corporate world in Washington, DC to raise her five rambunctious children with her husband in North Carolina, KC Freeman eventually found her way back to her lifelong desire to write paranormal fiction.
First, she dipped her toes into the writing world by ghostwriting cozy mysteries and romance novels. Once confident of her creative writing skills, she struck out on her own to write urban fantasy and paranormal romance with her debut novel, Rekindled Prophecy: Greylyn the Guardian Angel Book 1. A few books later, KC added the label, “USA Today Bestselling Author,” with her paranormal romance, Renegade Angel, incorporated into the Realm of Darkness box set.
KC writes mostly urban fantasy and paranormal romance novels. She also spends a lot of time editing manuscripts with her company, Book Mage Editing, and is certified by the Professional Book Editors Association.
Now that her five children are grown and flown, KC spends her time writing, editing, reading, hiking, exercising (in an attempt to get back a semblance of her pre-menopause body), and spoiling her fur baby chihuahua, Harley.
